<p class=MsoNormal><span class=contentheader>Overview</span><span
class=basiccontent><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p>Chapter Four describes how ethnic diversity of immigrants historically has
been perceived as threatening to white supremacist attitudes of the majority
group in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region>.
Although the country was created by immigrants who took the land and resources
from the indigenous people, those who immigrated earlier saw themselves as
natives and were critical of the foreign influence of current immigrants.
Their fears resulted in the development of an anti-immigrant ideology that we
now call <span class=SpellE>Nativism</span>. Those believing in this ideology
have historically attempted to curb immigration to <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region>, especially for those
immigrants who were perceived as not being white, and in the early 20th century
they used the so-called science of eugenics to justify their anti-immigration
activities. Because of the reform of immigration laws in 1965, ethnic diversity
of immigrants has dramatically increased, and the chapter concludes with a
description of anti-immigrant beliefs and activities that underscore the
persistence of anti-immigrant attitudes on the part of a significant percent of
the American population. </p>
